Addressing the defining issue of our time.
As a University with a diverse community of global citizens, we have a shared responsibility to work together to address the urgency of the climate and ecological emergency. We continue to work with partners, communities, and stakeholders to drive the transition to a decarbonised and regenerative economy in the west of England and beyond.
We are investing heavily in the student experience, campus improvements and new smart, low carbon technology to support the journey to a net zero and biodiversity rich future.
Our actions around sustainability are evidence-based and underpinned by a commitment to a just transition.
The University works collaboratively with its Students’ Union in order to ensure that the student voice is at the heart of our approach.
It’s absolutely right and appropriate to recognise and celebrate UWE’s longstanding and deep rooted commitment to sustainability action – it really is in the DNA of the organisation.
The judges felt this application exemplified what a whole organisation approach to sustainability looks like – embedded across all aspects of the institution, planned with real intent and delivered with tangible outcomes and an openness about lessons learned.
UWE takes its responsibility as an anchor institution in their region seriously. Partnership working is a very strong theme throughout – with local partners, students, the students’ union, trade unions and local partners. This demonstrates very mature leadership.
An enormously impressive application and a worthy winner.
"Winning this prestigious award would be a fantastic endorsement of UWE Bristol’s exceptional commitment to sustainability and of the efforts of many staff and students. It would validate our efforts to inspire and motivate others to practice sustainability and responsibility."
Professor Steve West, Vice Chancellor
