UWE Bristol Beeline

The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) BEELINE project, which began in 2018 as “The Frenchay Beeline”, is designed to integrate nature directly into the heart of the university, by providing an accessible network of edible pollinator planting across UWE campuses. There are 10 “core” plants chosen to provide food for staff and students as well as vital foraging opportunities for a wide variety of bees and other pollinating insects. The project aims to help tackle the decline in pollinator numbers by sustaining local populations within the built environment.

As well as the physical BEELINE locations there are numerous other elements that are part of the BEELINE framework. This framework is aimed at promoting and enhancing biodiversity across UWE campuses and linked to improving landscape, knowledge and understanding within the broader context of the University as not only an academic institution but also as a place of work, a home, a neighbour, and a partner.

The framework consists of 3 themes, BEELINE Inspire, BEELINE Haven and BEELINE Connect. These themes address 15 practical, engagement and promotion opportunities for UWE stakeholders within and beyond our boundaries.

What the Judges Thought

Beeline is a simple concept with excellent delivery and visibility that is highly replicable across the sector and beyond. The projects diverse engagement of staff, students, local schools and organisations and provision of practical tools for action alongside information exemplify the use of engagement opportunities to support wider impact and co-benefits.

What it Means to Win

“I am proud that the UWE Bristol BEELINE has been recognised for the fantastic opportunities it provides for staff, students and our local communities. This project has helped to shape many aspects of our external realm, delivering huge benefits for people and wildlife and has been a practical response to our declaration of an ecological emergency.”

Top 3 Learnings

  1. We had a clear idea of changes required but learned to evolve with stakeholder needs.
  2. We have had to become realistic with our timescales and accept improvements can take time.
  3. We are never finished; we keep on building and keep improving.
