Our roadmap for reaching Net Zero by 2040

The University of Lincoln has developed a phased and costed roadmap to achieve Net Zero by 2040.  Developed in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary consultancy, AECOM, it includes a building retrofit programme; the decarbonisation of heat; creating net zero building design standards; engaging with procurement and our top 10 suppliers to reduce scope three emissions; and a focus on sustainable travel and transport.

A dynamic tool has been developed to identify, prioritise and schedule retrofit works and estimate investment required for the delivery of discreet projects to reduce emissions. Projects are ranked using criteria such as carbon reduction potential, capital output, energy savings and business disruption.

A costed business case has been presented to our Senior Leadership Team and Board of Governors, including an estimated cost of reaching Net Zero by 2040, and savings from implementing energy efficiency measures.

We have developed specific communication tools, including an infographic, to communicate our plan to stakeholders, transforming our previously aspirational Net Zero target to a clear, costed plan for the University.

Top 3 Learnings

1. Having tangible, clearly defined projects, and cost estimates for our Net Zero target allows the University to plan for the financial and other resources required to deliver of our roadmap. The visual roadmap to Net Zero enables us to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, identifying the key steps on our Net Zero journey.
2. Achieving Net Zero will not be realised by one individual, team or even department. Collaboration and collective effort will be required to identify, own and implement net zero actions across a range of decisions and activities.
3. Embedding Net Zero considerations into this everyday activity will be essential to the successful delivery of this Net Zero Strategy.
