The project seeks to create spaces for exchange of knowledge and university experiences with a socioenvironmental impact through the efforts of the university's authorities, professors, and students. The project works on two essential dimensions - academic and experiential/university life - within the framework of recognition of national needs and challenges, adaptation to climate change and the 2030 agenda, and how universities can make an impact through students’ education in and outside the classroom, so that future decisions of leaders are ethical and responsible toward society and the environment.
In the academic dimension, systemic integration of sustainability in the curricula is sought. In the experiential dimension, opportunities are provided for students to apply what they learn into practical actions with a socioenvironmental impact during their time at the university, so that they will have a sustainable vision in the future, enabling them to stand out in their fields and make their mark on the world.
Excellent whole organisation approach to embedding sustainability into their education and student experience. A really systemic approach - they've looked at what they do as their core business offer and thought about how to embed sustainability into their educational offer - extra curricular, civic role with local businesses and social enterprises - this is the role of institutions and what all universities should be doing! They go beyond connecting with those with a pre-existing engagement with sustainability. There’s a great mix of learning of green skills in courses and more practical experience, offering a complete experience to the student.
The application is well written with impacts outlined. The video really brings the application to life and is very engaging. It highlights how students will have a 'full sustainability experience' whilst at the University, gaining the necessary sustainability skills and knowledge for the future. They will be fully prepared and 'future ready' for their careers ahead. The scale of impact across the University is significant (3000+ students) plus significant wider impact in the community through volunteering, social enterprises engagement and working with alumni. It would be great to explore if you could disseminate this model and approach among other universities to increase impact even further.
"We inspire our students to experience a study program without limits, developing the capacity to realize their dreams as professionals educated in values, with a focus on sustainability. This Green Gown Award will bolster our students’ confidence and inspire other universities to adopt sustainability as a cross-cutting approach."
