In April 2024, Queen’s University Belfast, in collaboration with Sustainable Development Solutions Network Ireland, launched Reach ‘24, a new arts and sustainability festival.
The ‘Reach ‘24’ festival examined the climate emergency and sustainable solutions via various art mediums including film screenings, performances, talks and an art exhibition. Much of the programme featured work by experimental art activists from across the island of Ireland.
The purpose of the festival was to see how art can communicate about sustainability in instances where science communication fails.
Getting the message across to people who are not particularly interested in sustainability is always challenging. The use of art is a medium which makes people think about the messages within the art. The judges thought that this was a very innovative way to introduce sustainability through using art, and provided opportunities for students and engaged the local community.
"Our Strategy 2030 sets out how we will embed the UN Sustainable Development Goals across all our activities, and the ‘Reach 24’ arts and sustainability festival is one of the ways we are nurturing a culture of sustainability.
We are delighted that the Green Gown Awards has recognised this annual event for bringing together experts in the art world to explore the climate crisis and to discuss sustainable solutions to help tackle it."
