The Wind Turbine Community Benefit Fund (CBF) originated with the installation of Lancaster University’s 2.3MW wind turbine in 2012. The CBF was established on a voluntary basis by Lancaster University, in order to provide a long-term benefit to local communities located in the vicinity of the wind turbine in recognition of its impact.
The purpose of the CBF is to provide grant awards for environmental and community projects to voluntary organisations and community groups based in Lancaster District near to the wind turbine. The CBF awards £20,000 of grants per annuum and as of May 2023 is open for applications for its 10th round of funding. Over the completed nine annual funding rounds the CBF has received 113 grant applications and awarded approximately £180,000 to 78 community and environmental projects.
Annual carbon savings achieved with the initiative:
A truly engaging and impactful community project with a 25 year life of the wind turbine, providing certainty of the funding for local community projects. The judges admired the way in which the wind turbine was generating income which was then being turned into investments for other environmental and community projects.
This approach recognises that environmental solutions can also have negative social effects that need to be acknowledged and addressed. It tackles for the "E" and the "S" in ESG. It is also a local, innovative finance initiative, and its positive impact on the local community is additional and well demonstrated.
“Sustainability has been at the heart of Lancaster University since its foundation. We're very proud that this Green Gown Award emphasises our commitment to building strong communities by creating positive change and working collaboratively.”
