WikiKata – A collaborative journey to preserve Indigenous languages

In Malaysia, there are more than 100 Indigenous languages, with most being classified as endangered or extinct. To save the rest from extinction, documentation of the language is key in ensuring that the language will not remain forgotten. Considering this, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia have been taking on a collaborative journey since 2023 by going down to Indigenous communities across Malaysia to preserve their endangered languages, in saving the centuries-long heritage and wisdom.

By utilising platforms such as Wiktionary (online dictionary), Lingua Libre (online pronunciation audio repository), and Wikitongues (language speech documentation), WikiKata not only helps to document and preserve these languages, but also empowers the communities to be self-sustainable in documenting their own language. With a team of passionate volunteers of years of experience, the knowledge sharing sessions conducted help to foster the interest within each community to preserve their own knowledge.
