This research introduces an internet of things (IoT)-based net-meter monitoring system with an Android app to reduce manual labour for measuring electricity units and raise user awareness of excessive power consumption. A mobile app automatically reads consumed electricity, and a low-cost wireless sensor network for a digital net-meter to reduce human error and energy costs. The net-meter automatically measures by using a microcontroller and sensors to monitor and regulates the user's energy usage and transmits the data via IoT and ESP8266 Wi-Fi modules.
The photovoltaic (PV) panel and inverter will export extracted energy into the national grid. This meter can also be used for load control, over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection, user statistics, and meter tampering alert. Distributors and consumers can access the bi-directional net-meter via a mobile app from anywhere in the world to monitor the entire process. This net-meter can be used for security, such as flame and gas detection, and users will receive SMS/Call alerts.
